Mary-&-John-wedding

John & Mary

Dear Friends,The first four months of 2014 have been full on for us, involving annual World Outreach International (WOI) prayer & planning meetings in Singapore, NZ and Australia, also visits to WOI teams based in neighbouring countries, and of course the wedding of David and Penny.

East-West Wedding. On a perfect weather day and picture book setting, David tied the knot with the lovely Penny in Northland, NZ on March 08. This was followed by three more wedding celebration dinners, ie in Chennai (Penny’s home city), Singapore (where they met five years ago) and Penang (where they are based). To be expected, each celebration was memorable, fun and very colourful.

Nations Course. Head WOI facilitator, Hendrik V, reckons the most recent six-week WOI cross-cultural Nations course held in South Africa this past March/April period, was the best ever! Some 12 participants serving in six African nations attended. Feedback from them helped back up Hendrik’s assessment. More than 220 WOI field personnel have now undertaken this great course. Two courses are held each year with the next set for Thailand this June / July.

2014-Nations-CoverTestimonies. I do hope you receive and read our Nation magazine. It is full of wonderful testimonies of what the Holy Spirit is doing through ordinary people on different continents today. These faith inspiring testimonies hopefully encourage folk to believe the same can happen where they are living also. Why not!  When we spend time with our WOI missionaries, just listening to them give account of what the Holy Spirit does through them (& through the locals they are training), we can tell that their own faith is very much alive and hungry for more of God.

Opportunity To Serve. After three years of dedicated service, Donna Elliott will step down as WOI Communications Manager this August. WOI is on the lookout for a Senior Graphic Designer to serve WOI and in turn all those serving with the Mission. Please help us make this important vacancy known.

Ahead. One of the many joys in what we do is spend time with (potential) new missionaries and help answer their many questions. The next three months will see us involved in this and other WOI assignments in South Africa, Australia, Malaysia, and of course Singapore.

In Closing. We are extremely grateful to the Lord and to those who financially partner with us in our non-salaried position as WOI ID. Your practical and prayer partnership truly encourages us.

Thank you.

Dear Friends,

Season Greetings! We trust that the coming Christmas and New Year celebrations will not only be enjoyable with family and friends, but also a time for all of us to reflect back over 2013 and also to look forward to another new year of opportunities in serving the Lord.

There were a number of highlights for us this year:

Family Tribe Visit. We had the joy of our three children, their respective spouses and all of our five grandchildren with us for two weeks in January.  It was also a joy for us to have Penny, David’s then girlfriend (now fiancé), join us during that time where she got to meet the rest of the family. It was truly a great way to start 2013. A fun time was had by all.20130108_134726

Field Visits. Spending quality time to strategize with key World Outreach International (WOI) leaders in Asia, Africa and Europe is always great time and resources well spent in our annual calendar. We come away from such times together with a greater appreciation of the sacrifices and commitment they all make – along with a renewed determination to represent them and their vision well.

Church Visits. Whether in Asia or elsewhere, speaking in churches and keeping congregations informed of the exciting developments taking place in global missions, is always a bonus for us. Often times we hear people say they are unaware of ‘good news’ things happening. One example springs to mind, is that 11 of the 20 nations identified as places where evangelical Christianity is growing the fastest in the world– are Islamic nations. There is much taking place in regions of the world that you won’t read or hear about via any media – but happening it is, Praise the Lord!!

Leadership Visits. Twice a year in Singapore we host 10-12 days of gatherings including experienced, as well as ‘up-and-coming’ leaders, from within the organisation. We love investing ourselves in such quality people, who also help us in the day-to-day running of WOI. We continually thank the Lord for them.

For our ministry partners who faithfully stand with us in the cause of world mission, a BIG thank you – again!  We so need you! Nothing of eternal worth happens unless born in prayer, and we so appreciate those who link arms with us in prayer and intercession, asking for the Lord’s leading, protection and provision. We can’t do what we are called to do unless the Lord aligns hearts with us.

We praise God for you. Merry Christmas!

With much love,

John & Mary Elliott

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Singapore!  Some exciting developments and events have happened that we want to share with you.

DJ-&-Pen-'13

David & Penny at their engagement party.

David’s Engaged! Our youngest son David, sprang a surprise on his long-time girlfriend, Penny, when he travelled to Chennai, India earlier this month to pop the question! Although Penny’s parents and siblings were aware of David’s plans (as were we), Penny had no idea what was about to happen. She was called home from their church around 5pm on a Thursday night and brought up to the roof top of their apartment block where David and some local musician friends struck up the notes for David to sing Franky Valli’s song, “I can’t take my eyes off you.” He is a real romantic like his dad!!  “Yeah, right,” says Mary!!  John-&-Mary-'13He sang really well to a stunned young lady who eventually had a beaming smile on her face. With the song completed, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. With the biggest smile ever, she said, YES!!  Penny’s family and ourselves were all obscured from her view at first, and we came out of our hiding places as he proposed. We are thrilled for them both. They plan to marry in NZ next March 08, then have another wedding ‘celebration’ in Chennai later the same month.

2013-08-03-11.49.54WOI Meetings.  There have been a series of annual WOI leadership meetings in Singapore last month that coincided with the official opening and dedication of the new debt free WO International Office. It was great to celebrate God’s amazing provision with colleagues and friends. This year WOI has also launched five regional vision teams (RVTs), ie two in Africa and three in Asia. One outcome we are hoping from these strategic gatherings is to identify future candidates for consideration as regional leaders, who will relate to field personnel.  As we write this three RVTs have taken place in West Kalimantan (Indonesia), Mozambique and Thailand. The India sub-continent and West Africa are still to happen. We have been greatly encouraged by listening to what the Holy Spirit is saying through the participants about future ministry developments in their respective regions. These are exciting times.

Cover-frontNew Mission DVD.  WOI has just produced a 3-part teaching DVD series on cross-cultural mission designed for local church small groups. The goal of this series is to help Christian people understand the nature and challenge of missions through discussion and reflection. Check out the promo on the WOI website www.world-outreach.com  A small manual / notes comes with it. A great investment for your church programme in 2014!

House church meeting of new believers in Thailand.

Ministry Highlights.  The Holy Spirit continues to ‘WOW’ us by doing mind blowing and heart-warming things through different WOI teams. Despite the political chaos as well as social and economic upheaval in Egypt this year, WOI director there, Nathan Bassaly, reports thousands of former Muslims have now become followers of Jesus Christ. Other ministries there that WOI know, are reporting the same news. In Thailand, John & Nok, who head up a village house church movement, tell of literal miracles and numerous healings as new Thai believers reach out in witness and prayer to their Thai neighbours. Whole households have come to the Lord.  Our son David and the WOI church planting team he is working with in Cambodia, report 3-5 fold multiplication of village house churches planted within a 3-week period since their previous visit in going there to teach and train new believers on how to share their testimony and pray for the sick.

Nation Course delegation in South Africa earlier this year.

Nations delegation in South Africa earlier in 2012.

Nations Course. The second WOI 6-week intensive cross-cultural training course began in Chiang Mai, Thailand on September 15. There was another good intake with 26 missionaries and/or missionaries to-be in training, participating from such countries as Australia, NZ, Korea, USA, Philippines, Indonesia, Germany, Belgium, Holland and the UK.  WOI will be conducting two more Nations Courses in 2014, one in South Africa (Mar/Apr) and in Thailand in the second half of the year. If you know of people who could benefit from attending a  training course of different cross cultural modules, then get in touch with us.

Opportunities To Serve.  If you know of any English teachers that would be willing to serve in either a language centre in Thailand or a school in N-E India for 12 months in 2014, then please have them contact us.  The need for both is quite urgent.

Coming Up.  We will be ‘on the road’ for much of the rest of the year with WOI meetings, speaking engagements and appointments in Australia, NZ, England, Europe, Malaysia and Bangladesh. Challenging but also exciting assignments ahead. We really do appreciate you covering us in regular prayer.  This year we have felt more spiritual opposition than in previous years.

In Closing. We are so thankful to the Lord for His faithfulness.  We know we are where He wants us to be, doing what He has called us to.  Your practical partnership and encouragement blesses our hearts. Thank you.

Dear Friends,

Greetings! We trust your Easter celebrations went well.

Elliott family reunion

Elliott family reunion

Family Reunion. This year could not have started better for us in that we had the joy of having our three adult children, their respective spouses (except for David), and five grandchildren with us for the first two weeks of January. Much fun was had by all. Our little two-bedroom apartment at times was unrecognizable when 12, (sometimes more) people gathered to eat together and/or make plans for the day. It has been more than 20 years since our three, Deborah, Stephen and David, have all been in Singapore together.  Singaporean friends spoilt them all, making their time here most memorable.

WOI Meetings. It has been standard practice for some time now that the period from late January through to mid-February is ideal for different leaders within World Outreach International (WOI), to get together in Singapore to pray, talk, and strategize for the year ahead.  Three weeks of inspired, high powered, brain storming and/or brain draining meetings was the limit for most. As a result some exciting new ministry initiatives are to be launched during the second half of the year.

John ‘relaxing’ on holiday

John ‘relaxing’ on holiday

Time Out. One half of our annual holidays is usually tagged with a visit to NZ for a WOI and a WOI-NZ Board meeting in the February/March period. We have a favourite holiday destination up in Northland by a rolling surf beach where John’s parents built a simple, yet sturdy holiday home just after WW2. The seaside ‘bach’ (house) as it is known, has needed some long overdue repairs and painting. While we had some great walks on the huge white sandy beach and enjoyed the magnificent beauty of the area, most free time was spent painting sections of the exterior (John), and fixing things inside (Mary), so there was little time for fishing. John let the fish know he would be back!!

Moving Office. Just before Easter the WOI team in Singapore were packing up for a shift to our new office on the outskirts of the CBD. It was an emotional time for some long-serving team members who have enjoyed the very comfortable (rental) facilities these past 16 years.  Unfortunately there have been a number of delays in getting the keys, various permits and the renovation contractors started, so we won’t move into the new office until late April. In the meantime most team members will work from their respective homes. We continue to rejoice and praise the Lord for His provision of this new debt-free office.

New believers in Thai prison being water baptized

New believers in Thai prison being water baptized

Ministry Highlights. The Holy Spirit continues to do mind-blowing and heart-warming things through different WOI teams. Lorraine Dierck, WOI Thailand field leader, was in Singapore recently and shared testimonies of some wonderful breakthroughs. Her colleague, WOI Thai mission partners John and Nok and their team, tell of literal signs and wonders happening, resulting in whole families having come to Christ. Also some 18 monks and at least seven prisoners have been water baptized.  There is also testimony of a new believer who experienced a bumper crop of corn when he obediently obeyed the voice of the Lord to plant seed when local growing conditions were at their worst. John and Nok’s teams have recorded more than 12,000 baptisms in the past two years! All praise to the Lord.

Coming Up. We will be ‘on the road’ for most of May and the first part of June – in Europe and South Africa, for various WOI assignments.  In South Africa we will be putting plans in place for the launching of new deployment centres in key ‘least reached people’ group regions. In July the first of four WOI Regional Vision Teams for the year will take place, this one in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.  Exciting times ahead.

In Closing. We continue to thank the Lord for His faithful provision these many years. We know we are where He wants us to be, doing what He has called us to. Your partnership greatly encourages and blesses our hearts. Thank you.
